Speaker Guidelines
Speakers for Central Iowa Intergroup events are to have 6 months back-to-back abstinence.
As a reminder to those leading/speaking in our events, we ask that you honor Traditions Six and Ten*:
- The message we carry is of OA’s Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. Please do not mention outside topics, programs or resources by name.
- Please do not read or share from non-OA approved literature or carry such booksinto the meeting rooms.
- Please do not mention controversial issues – dietary, political, religious or socialwhen sharing.
- Please do not mention specific names of people in recovery.
- Keep the focus on personal recovery, on how using OA’s steps and tools has helped(balance your talk so it is more about recovery than the problem).
- By sharing your experience (what life was like), strength (what happened) and hope (what it’s like now), others will hear what they need to about OA. This is how we allcarry the message.!
Thank you for your service to our fellowship and carrying the message to still suffering compulsive eaters.
* Tradition Six:
An OA group ought never endorse, finance, or lend the OA name to any related facility or outside enterprise, lest problems of money, property, and prestige divert us from our primary purpose.
* Tradition Ten:
Overeaters Anonymous has no opinion on outside issues; hence the OA name ought never be drawn into public controversy.
